#picbod will look a little differently this year but you can still be a part of the class community and produce outcomes to our weekly tasks.

As Jonathan works on other modules this year on the BA Photography degree here at Coventry, Matt will be leading the class of #picbod 2013. We have never looked to stand still while open education moves rapidly on and so and rather than keep going in a familiar direction we will take this opportunity to experiment with different ways of doing things.

So what does this actually mean? Well, picbod.org wont be the place to go for all the latest, instead, the class will be hanging out in a Google community found here. It is an open community and everyone is encouraged to join, as well as to actively contribute to the space. We will feature weekly tasks, notes and outcomes with a large part played by our own students.

What about the #picbod hashtag in Twitter? We will still be using this, it’s been invaluable up to now for both attending and remote students so keep tweeting your thoughts, outcomes and links relating to #picbod using the hashtag.

Many thanks to Grant Scott at HUNGRY EYE for setting and judging the “White Shirt” task and competition way back in week 4. We aggregated all of the entries from Flickr, the blogs, Facebook,Twitter, email and from the links in the comments. Grant and the HUNGRY EYE team went over them and came back to us this week with their winner.

“Mariya seemed to understand the possibilities ,which a simple white shirt offers as a vehicle to create both atmosphere and narrative. Her images are suggestive, emotive and questioning. They suggest sexuality without being obvious and made me look into the images to question her story. In both it’s inception and completion.” Grant Scott HUNGRY EYE

Congratulations to Mariya Mileva who wins a THINKTANK camera bag for her set . . . → Read More: HUNGRY EYE “White shirt” competition winner.

Ludwig Haskins gave a talk on his father’s career for #picbod discussing the creative contexts and continuing influences of Sam’s work. One of the greatest photographic talents to emerge from South Africa, Sam remains more than ever, a potent influence on creative, portrait, glamour and fashion photography. He leaves a stunning artistic legacy and a very inspiring example of the photographer as the committed artist at work on every detail of his creation.

Candy Cigarette, 1989 ©SALLY MANN

Mann’s images focus on her family growing up amongst the serene landscape of a home in rural Virginia. The book was featured by some of our students during week one , was this the first time you saw it? Maybe its an old favourite, hugely over-rated or offensive. Let us know and share your thoughts over here.

And as an appetite whet-er, here is a guest post from the Photo Book Club highlighting a few resources for more information and inspiration on Sally Mann and her work:

As we look at Sally Mann’s ‘Immediate Family’ this month it is worth acknowledging the artist beyond this single publication. And so below are some useful links and resources to find out a little more about one of America’s most important female artists. You can also see the links below for other publications by Mann.

We will feature another ‘food for thought’ post shortly looking more closely at resources linked to ‘Immediate Family’.

1. Perhaps the best resource is the film ‘What Remains: The Life and Work of Sally Mann‘, directed by Steven Cantor.
Sections of the film can be found on Youtube or you can buy the complete film here.

2. In this interview from American Suburb X, Sally Mann speaks with Steven Cantor (director of ‘What Remains’) about the process of making the documentary, and in particular about the relationships between Mann and her children.

3. This next video is not nearly as in depth as ‘What Remains’ but it still offers a great insight int Mann’s mind, and process as well as hearing from her children about their mothers image making and use of them as subjects.
